Increase in Number of Phishing Attacks

There has been a spurt in the number of Phishing messages sent in the past few months. The second half of 2007 saw a 5 percent increase in the number of phishing messages sent across the internet. The total number of phishing messages traced in this time was 207,547. This is equal to 1134 messages every single day!

Prevalence of Corporate Email Snooping

The practice of corporates snooping on their employees’ outbound emails as well as surveying newer modes of communication like blogs and message boards is alive and kicking. Here are a few numbers on the same:

44% of surveyed companies detected an email leak of confidential information in the past one year
41% of large companies surveyed employed staff to analyze content of outgoing mail
26% of companies terminated an employee in the past 12 months for violating email policies
11% of companies reprimanded employees for misuse of public space like blogs and message boards
14% of public companies noticed a leak of unannounced financial information by employees on message boards or blogs

Increase in Infected Web Pages On the Web

In 2007, approximately 5000 infected web pages were detected on an average in a day. This quarter, this number has soared to around 15,000 per day. That is one web page every five seconds. 79 percent of the infected web pages are hosted on legitimate websites.

How Big is Spam Mail?

For the first three months of 2008, 92.3 percent of all email sent globally was spam! In this time period, 23,300 web pages related to spam were created every day. USA and Russia are the top two spammers in the world. Russia’s contribution has doubled in this time period. Turkey now contributes to 5.9 percent of all spam.

How Many Viruses in All?

Symantec has recently detected the One Millionth Malware (Virus, Trojans, Worms…). The second half of 2007 saw Symantec identify 499,811 new forms of malware -136% over the numbers identified in the first half. The total number of malware that Symantec has now identified stands at 1,122,31; 711,912 of which are from 2007 alone!

Losses Due to Internet Crime

The Internet Crime Center is a collaboration between FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center of US. According to them, 207,000 complaints have been reported ranging from child pornography to auction fraud. These crimes had together cost $200 million in 2006 and $240 million in 2007. That is around $680 per complaint!

Penetration of Corporate Web Security

Increase in Security Spend This Year

A recent research of 2000 professionals in 10 countries by Cisco has revealed that almost 62 percent of the companies are planning to increase their security spend on IT infrastructure this year. Of these 62 percent, more than half of them are expected to invest at least 10 percent of the spending more than what they invested last year.
