A recent study by Epsilon gives us an idea of the reach Email marketing has had and how it is growing

Email open rate in Q3 2008 : 19.8%
Email open rate in Q3 2009 : 22.0%

Click through rate(CTR) in Q3 2008 : 5.9%
Click through rate(CTR) in Q3 2009 : 6.2%

YoY growth in average email volume per organization : 7.5%
