Gartner predicts that 2.3 trillion text messages will be sent through the major world markets in 2008 (up from 1.9 trillion SMSes in 2007)! And the leader, as one would expect is not USA which accounts for only 301 billion (up from 189 billion in 2007), but the Asian markets. Here is a prediction of the number of SMSes that were sent from some major Asian economies in 2007:

A mind boggling 1.5 billion cell phones! That is 16% more than the 2006 sale figures of 990.9 million. 330 million mobile phones were sold in the last quarter alone. The top five handset makers in this market and their market shares are

The projected penetration in the use of the mobile social network users shows double digit growth figures in the coming 5 years.
The projected number of mobile social network users by 2010 : 300 millionl, approximately 7% of the total mobile phone users.
This number is predicted to grow steadily to 950 million by 2012. This shall approximately be over 18% of the total mobile phone population.

In January 2007, Japan recorded a milestone 100 million mobile phones. In another one year, by January 2008, this number had increased to 100.9 million mobile phones.
