IAmNews – Still Test Running

I am just curious. Are companies launching too quick? I would assume that a company needs to conceptualize, get demo ready, build the site and when it is fully functional for at least a public beta launch, then launch the site.

It is now exactly one year since IAmNews launched. The website was supposed to be an open platform for publishers and contributing journalists to participate.  So,let us say you own a soccer related website and would like to cover news from a local soccer match in France where you cannot be physically present. So, you may request for local journalists to cover the event and use the IAmNews platform to coordinate.

It sounds like a pretty neat idea to rope in freelance journalists to help you provide worldwide journalism. But one then, one year since launch and the website is still test running! The traffic doesn’t seem like it can get any lower. Why’s that? I wouldn’t blame the traffic levels since I understand only so much can be done at a test traffic level. But now, what does “launch” mean?

All I can guess is that the site was launched much earlier than it was meant to be. This does not necessarily harm the product. But, the website does lose on the buzz that gets generated during a launch. In the case of IAmNews, they did have a solid buzz during their launch at Techcrunch50, but have not been able to use any of that since the site is far from ready one year hence.

GazoPa – When Are Things Kicking Off?

Gazopa is an image search engine which strives to supplement you with the search feature forever denied by Google Image Search – the ability to input one image and get all other images that look similar. I’ve always wanted a search engine that would input the image an actress, whose name I do not know and get other pictures of hers, or at least her name.

When Gazopa launched in public beta last year, it seemed like they could be the next big thing on the image search frontier. I still am hopeful, but just that the wait seems endless. During the launch last year, Gazopa had launched in public beta. But today, a year later, they have gone back into private beta. The number of images indexed have remained unchanged – 50 million of them.

However, Gazopa has launched an iPhone app since then, which makes me all the more hopeful about a launch pretty soon. After all, this is a technology that could not only be useful for common image searches, but also be useful in ecommerce websites where people look for particular kind of products that only a technology like Gazopa’s can negotiate.

Update: Exciting news is that Gazopa has written to us that the website shall be turning to open beta within one month from now and also that the website now has close 60 million indexed images. The website is backed by Hitachi, so we can expect a pretty strong post-launch promotion.
