A huge majority of websites on the internet make money simply from visitors clicking on advertisements. This simply means these are the people who have been indirectly keeping these websites up and running on the internet. So how big is this crowd? In a study by Chitika,

86 million web users were studied in a 2 week period
Among them, only 1,863,710 clicked on ads.

That is roughly 2%. This small population has kept a big chunk of the online economy moving.
