Thanks to cost cutting, Motorola made a profit in the second quarter of 2009. Here are the snippets from its performance in the second quarter:

Handsets shipped : 14.8 million (28.1 million in Q2 2008)
Market share : 5.5% (9.1% in Q2 2008)
Revenue from mobile devices :$1.8 billion (3.3 billion in Q2 2008)
Net Income :$26 million ($4 million in Q2 2008)

Surprise Surprise if you were to guess Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail as the top three. There is an entrant in the top five you might have not given much thought about:

1. Yahoo mail : 104 million users
2. MySpace : 68 million
3. Windows Live Hotmail : 48 million
4. AOL Email : 38 million
5. Gmail : 37 million

Online advertising is growing at a terrific pace in Canada and now constitutes 11% of all advertising revenue. Online advertising revenue has quadrupled in the past five years. Here are the advertising revenues in the past:

2007 : $1.241 billion
2008 : $1.6 billion (29% growth)

The online advertising revenues are projected to reach $1.75 billion by the end of 2009.
